What Is The Root Cause Of Autoimmune Disease?

what causes autoimmune disease

What Causes Autoimmune Disease?

This is a question that is often ignored by much of the medical community. The diagnosis of autoimmunity is given on a regular basis, but doctors often fail to discuss the root cause of these conditions. The traditional treatment for most autoimmune problems is to treat the symptoms with medications. For example, in painful inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, doctors give medicines that suppress inflammation and the immune system. And although these medicines can be helpful in reducing symptoms, they do not resolve what causes autoimmune disease in the first place.

In the following special presentation, Dr. Osborne breaks down the known mechanisms and causes of AID.

According to the American Autoimmune Related Disorders Association (AARDA)

  • An estimated 50 million Americans suffer with autoimmune disease (AID) compared to 9 million with cancer and 22 million with heart disease.
  • AID is the #1 cause of death in women under the age of 65
  • There are more than 100 forms of AID currently recognized by research.
  • Symptoms cross many specialties and can affect all body organs.
  • Medical education provides minimal learning about autoimmune disease.
  • Specialists are generally unaware of interrelationships among the different autoimmune diseases.
  • Initial symptoms are often intermittent and unspecific until the disease becomes acute.
  • Research is generally disease-specific and limited in scope. More information-sharing and crossover among research projects on different autoimmune diseases is needed.

What Are The Mechanisms That Trigger Autoimmune Disease?

trigges of autoimmune diseaseThere are several scientifically recognized mechanisms behind autoimmunity. The following three are the most well recognized:

  1. Excessive hygeine
  2. Molecular mimicry
  3. Intestinal permeability (AKA Leaky Gut)

All three of these issues can lead to chronic inflammation. It is the chronic inflammation that medicines try to target. But the bigger questions to ask are – What causes autoimmune disease, and what activates these three mechanisms?

There are 5 categorical causes of autoimmune disease. These 5 causes help to trigger the three mechanisms above. Simply put, these causes are:

  1. Food (especially gluten)
  2. Chemical exposures (including things like pesticides, vaccines and other medicines)
  3. Infections and microbiome imbalances
  4. Nutritional deficiencies – vitamins and minerals
  5. Chronic or severe acute stress events

If you struggle with autoimmune disease and find yourself frustrated with the current model of treatment, it is highly recommended that you find a doctor who understands these mechanisms and triggers. A doctor who can help you identify which of these categorical causes you might have, and what you can do to overcome them.

  1. I’m not healed, but my symptoms have become more manageable with a grain free diet. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about 8 months ago after years of suffering with no answers as to why!!!

    1. Hello Kimberly, my doctor told me I had the highest immune system he had ever seen. Wanted to know more about me. I probably should have told him more. Basically, I was exercising, low intensity, regularly. I was taking karate on a never miss basis…black now. Years later, I exercise some now but not regular…don’t know what my immune systems is now. Hope this helps. I have not shared this info much, if any, before. Best

  2. Hello Dr,

Please give me advice how to treat my problems. What type op breakfast and food I can eat to heal my body from all this simtoms pls. I appreciate your knowledge and shared your video on my Fb and sent it also to fam and friends to watch. Many blessings forward.

  3. Thank you for this.
I have osteoarthritis/rheumatoid arthritis/IBS. I have been struggling with my diet. Breakfast is a struggle. I would appreciate advice.
I have had 8 surgeries including bilateral knee replacements etc, etc.
    I live in London, UK

    1. Me too. I am also 61% English though I am an American. So diet may not have much to do with it. I remember when McDonald’s opened in London. Maybe it is diet. What types of foods do you eat? 🙂

  4. Just watched your video and learned a lot more. Thank you for giving us the information we need to take charge of our bodies. I always try to spread this knowledge but so often are looked at as fanatical and obsessed. I am none of these and have so much room for improvement with myself. It’s a lot of work and is tiring to practice what you say and what I know but my healing and constant learning is what is moving me there. Please keep sharing your knowledge. Some day in the distant future your name will be in the literature just as Dr. Semmelweis is credited for the idea of hand washing but your contributions will be even greater.

    1. Thank so much Dr Osborne, you are the best! I been following you for about 5 years and keeps learning more, and more you are so helpful with all people that really wants to learn from you, thanks for giving your precious time to us, it is really appreciated 🙏👍👌

      1. I believe the greatest doctor is the one within. I could share and discuss much more…..beyond scope of this context. Low intensity exercise is key. Best

  5. Why would your body attack itself? If the body attacked itself, we would all be dead. The body is not designed to attack itself. There is an actual cause for the inflammation, a virus most likely.
Autoimmune is another myth perpetuated by doctors.

    1. Tell that to the people who are suffering from it. My friend’s Daughter just died from it a few months ago so your response is quite insensitive.

  6. I am a story that fits this. Was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of 14, in ninth grade. The following year a nurse put my diabetes bloodwork in the wrong place and was tested for celiac disease, coming back positive. Then following the diet and blood sugar levels doing great, my junior year of high school I was diagnosed with chronic Urticaria, breaking out with hives that could make my eyes swell closed and lips be 3x their size. Doctors didn’t know the cause. And senior year, driving from getting my driver’s license, I had a seizure. Mother grabbed the wheel. Now having had the second brain surgery which has stopped them. And at college I became allergic to the man made material polyester using plastic and chemicals. Since the surgery though I have begun reacting to lactose and doctors don’t believe. I know this is the case with my own testing.

  7. Hi, Dr. O.
I’ve been experiencing idiopathic angioedema (facial) more frequently than ever before. I’m confident it is stress-induced and have been refusing prednisone and singulair due to its side effects, etc. Being diagnosed with undifferentiated connective tissue disease continues to be a mystery for the rheumatologists whom I’ve seen. Just trying to figure out if there are any triggers besides stress lately as I complete my doctorate and handle family stressors. Let me know if you think bovine colostrum supplements would be a good way to start healing my gut. Thanks, Dr. O., for your knowledge and expertise!

  8. I was a severe case of Aplastic Anemia platelet count 0.06. I do not eat any grains, diary, sugars, eggs. I am free of simptome of AA for 13 months now. Do not drink any meds or Cyclosporin. If I can do it anyone can.

  9. Our understanding of the complexity of the immune system is only in its infancy. It involves literally almost all the functions within the human body. Then add DNA mutations to the mix and you begin to understand why it is one of the least understood systems in the body.

  10. Please help!!! I love your presentation and want to study further. You said it was possible to get the slides from your presentation. How may I have access to these to study. The video quality was not good, resolution is very low so the slides don’t come across.
