Got Allergies? 5 Natural Ways to Feel Better

Over 50 million Americans struggle with seasonal allergies. Chronic inflammation and imbalance in the immune system are some of the underlying root causes. Spring time is often the most difficult and my patients are seeking out natural alternatives to relieve allergy symptoms. While doctors might advise you to stay indoors to prevent allergies, that is not practical with our busy lives.

Here are 5 natural approaches that can help you to treat allergies and reduce their bothersome symptoms:

  1. Thieves Oil

This is a blend of essential oils that was used by thieves in ancient Europe to protect themselves against the plague outbreak. It is a powerful immune system regulator and can help to clear the sinuses and reduce nasal congestion.  Mix 2 drops of thieves oil in half a teaspoon of coconut oil. Rub it on the temples, over the sinuses and the soles of the feet. You could also use it in a diffuser or vaporizer.

  1. Neti Pot

Neti pot is a small pot that helps cleanse your nasal passages. Nasal irrigation helps to clear allergens and toxins from your respiratory tract. Fill the pot with water. Then add 1/8th teaspoon of Himalayan salt or sea salt and 3-4 drops of eucalyptus oil. Alternatively, you could use a nasal irrigation system or sinus rinse that works via the same mechanism.

  1. Peppermint Oil

Research shows that peppermint oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory that can treat the root causes of allergies and respiratory ailments. Use it in a diffuser or vaporizer to relieve allergic symptoms. You could also mix 3-4 drops of peppermint oil in half teaspoon of coconut oil and rub it over the affected areas.

  1. Boost your vitamin C intake

Vitamin C improves your immune system function and can be beneficial in treating allergies. Increase your intake of vitamin C rich foods. The following are excellent choices:

Fruits: Strawberries, oranges, kiwi, papaya and guava

Veggies: Brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens, bell peppers, broccoli and cauliflower

  1. Wash off the allergens

Remember to take a shower and wash your hair at the end of the day. The allergens often stay in the hair and scalp and can get on your pillows and bed sheets, thus increasing your allergen exposure during the night.

A lot can be done to naturally relieve your allergy symptoms and improve the functioning of the immune system by addressing the root causes. Hope these strategies help!
