Everyone learns something when they have new experiences. I’m no different, and in this episode of Fed and Fearless, I’m sharing three things I learned from a 10-day business trip I recently went on. My business trip was to two different business conferences that helped me understand a few new things about myself.

First of all, I’d like to give you a suggestion. If you’re traveling to a conference or an event, always try to get there a few days early. This allows you to get to know the area around you and also, hopefully, some of the other event attendees who are doing the same thing. And when you feel more comfortable with your surroundings, you’ll be able to be more present at the conference you’re at.

I had the honor of speaking at these business conferences. And, even though I’m confident in my abilities as a coach and entrepreneur, there were times when I still felt I had to prove my worth. I was so stuck in this proving mindset that I was actually having trouble feeling present in the moment, even when speaking with others, because I found that I was thinking about what I was going to say next.

Learning to take a compliment is something else I need to be better at. In fact, everyone needs to learn how to receive compliments with grace. When someone praises you, it does nothing to brush it off, it’s actually an injustice to both of you. Is their feedback not good enough for you? Does it make you conceited to accept a compliment? No to both, so just take a deep breath and say thank you.

Finally, integrating community into your life is so important for growth. You might have multiple communities that you’re a part of, but when you’re an entrepreneur, hanging out with other business owners can be a big game-changer. Finding out that there are other people who have the same problems, are experiencing the same things, and who can give you advice on how they handled it, or even just be there in commiseration is amazing.

Which of these three lessons was most valuable to you? Which resonated most with where you’re at right now in your life? Let me know in the comments wherever you see this episode.

Quotes

“Learning how to take some of the pressure off myself to make everything perfect has been part of my reduction in proving.” (19:16)

“Accepting a compliment is not making myself better than other people. And really, deflecting a compliment makes the other person potentially feel like their feedback isn’t valuable. So, it’s really important to be able to accept compliments.” (23:54)

“I think we don’t value the benefit of being around people who understand what you’re going through, who have been there before, who are there right now and can really just stand in that place with you.” (33:13)

“Being around others going through the same journey will help you stay committed to your own journey.” (38:37)
